40 Year Retrospective

Tannersville Works presents New York artist Barbara Beck in a major retrospective spanning from the 1960s through the 2010s. This exhibition brings together over 250 pieces showcasing the breadth and evolution of Beck’s practice—from early drawings, watercolor paintings, handmade paper fired porcelain sculptures, woodcuts and monoprints, to collages and pottery. Beck’s work has been recognized by numerous awards, publications, and film features.

Beck, who holds a B.A. in studio art from the University of Minnesota and taught ceramics at the 92nd Street YMCA in Manhattan, combines an eclectic range of materials and techniques. She creates vibrant and dynamic watercolor paintings, intimate charcoal drawings, and porcelain sculptural elements that she integrates into layered collages. Her recent work includes small ceramic sculptures, bold monoprints, and expressive woodcuts. With playful, deliberate confusion of elements, Beck manipulates space, plane, and illusion to draw viewers into each composition.

Beck previously worked from her art studio on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where she also owned and ran Studio Gallery 88—an alternative exhibition space devoted to underrepresented artists.
