An Evolving Intelligence
Tannersville Works is thrilled to present a comprehensive retrospective exhibition of celebrated American modernist Barbara Beck.
Exhibition will launch during Tannersville Works Fall Show, opening October 23, 2026, and will remain open to the public through the end of the year.
Paper Collages of the 1960s and 1970s
The centerpiece of the autumn exhibition is a rare, focused presentation of Beck’s seminal paper collages and drawing constructions from the 1960s and 1970s. Having studied painting and drawing at the University of Minnesota before delving deeply into ceramics, Beck discovered a tactile intersection between two-dimensional surface work and raw material structure.
Beck, who holds a B.A. in studio art from the University of Minnesota and taught ceramics at the 92nd Street YMCA in Manhattan, combines an eclectic range of materials and techniques. She creates vibrant and dynamic watercolor paintings, intimate charcoal drawings, and porcelain sculptural elements that she integrates into layered collages. Her recent work includes small ceramic sculptures, bold monoprints, and expressive woodcuts. With playful, deliberate confusion of elements, Beck manipulates space, plane, and illusion to draw viewers into each composition.
Beck previously worked from her art studio on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where she also owned and ran Studio Gallery 88—an alternative exhibition space devoted to underrepresented artists.
Renowned art critic and historian Wendy Gittler famously described Beck’s practice as operating “in the manner of an alchemist,” observing how she transmutes a personal universe of handmade paper, strings, straw, fired porcelain, and ink into a poetic topography of imagined landscapes and biological charts. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to view these intricate historical works, which celebrate structural mutability and geometric mystery.
An Artist with Deep Historical “Receipts”
While Barbara Beck’s presence in today’s contemporary market represents a major opportunity for a new generation of collectors, her historical and curatorial record is exceptionally deep:
On-Screen Provenance: In 1979, legendary set designer Mel Bourne selected 11 of Beck’s abstract paintings from her Elaine Benson Gallery show to dress Woody Allen’s personal apartment in the classic film Manhattan (1979). Her work was also featured in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Luna (1979) and Allan Carr’s Can’t Stop the Music (1980).
Institutional Pedigree: Beck has exhibited at premier American institutions, including the Walker Art Center (1963, 1966), the Minneapolis Institute of Art (1963), and the Brooklyn Museum.
Prestigious Fellowships: She is a recipient of the prestigious New York State Council on the Arts CAPS Grant (1983–84) and the Tanne Foundation Award (2005).
Elite Private Collectors: Over her career, her pieces have been acquired by highly discerning curatorial eyes and historic figures, including pioneering civil rights attorney Judge Robert L. Carter, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala, and legendary Menil Collection founding director Walter Hopps.
A Four-Decade Practice: Early 1960s to Early 2000s
Beyond the featured collages, the exhibition charts the sweeping evolution of Beck’s visionary vocabulary from the early 1960s through the early 2000s. The retrospective traces her artistic trajectory across a stunning variety of mediums:
1960s: Early oil paintings and organic material experimentations.
1970s: The emergence of her iconic “drawing constructions” and structural watercolors.
1980s & 1990s: Rhythmic grids, complex band systems, and highly structured woven watercolor constructions.
2000s: A dazzling culmination of lusciously colored monoprints, woodcuts, and expressive, large-scale mapping abstractions.
