The original artwork was created by the artist Thomas Worth and published in 1877. The print depicts a trotting horse race, a popular subject for the Currier & Ives firm. The text visible on the print lists some of the horses or jockeys featured: "GOLDSMITH MAID, AMERICAN GIRL, LUCY, AND HENRY".
Currier & Ives was a New York City-based printmaking business that operated from 1835 to 1907, known for mass-producing popular prints of American life.
