Rebuilding is a particularly timely story that hits on a number of popular contemporary themes, among them grey divorce, home renovation, and a life reconstructed in nature. More specifically, it’s an exploration of the parallels between rebuilding a home, and rebuilding a life.
Here's the thumbnail version:
Several years ago, shortly after Wendy's marriage ended, she bought a dilapidated mansion on the edge of the Catskill Mountains. Built in 1893 and listed on the National Historic Register, the house was halfway to disaster. What it needed—like her—was some serious repair.
But as a newly minted, still-disoriented, member of the grey-divorce set, she had no idea what she was getting into. It never even occurred to her that moving to a broken-down house in the mountains with her 12-year-old in tow might be a harebrained plan.
So they moved in.
Part memoir, part travelogue, part home repair guide, and part personal journey, this book is the story of the year and a half she spent living in the mountains and fixing up the house’s plumbing and electric, heat and insulation, windows, bathrooms, kitchen, floors, foundation—and, not coincidentally, herself. Set in a remarkable, historic neighborhood, and supported by an endearing cast of characters including her son, her mom, their contractor, and a handful of locals and neighbors—and with cameos by their resident mice, snakes, bats, and bears—Rebuilding is her love letter to the Catskills and her celebration of repair of all kinds.
